Arm Lift

A brachioplasty, or arm lift is a surgical procedure used to eliminate the excess skin and fat from the upper arms. This sagging skin is usually caused by weight loss and aging.

 

PROCEDURE 
• The incisions are made on the inner and under the surface of the arm, often in a zigzag pattern. The incision may run from the armpit all the way to the elbow.
• Liposuction [Link to http://www.pisarskimd.com/liposculpture.html] is sometimes used to remove fat from under the arm before the excess skin is excised. The excess skin and fat is removed and the remaining skin is stretched and sutured into place.
• Surgery takes about 1 to 2 hours and is performed under general anesthesia with return home the same day.
• Following the arm lift surgery, a dressing is applied and the arms are wrapped in elastic bandages.

RECOVERY 
Bruising and swelling are to be expected. Patients should limit their arm usage for the first two weeks. Most patients can return to driving and exercise approximately 2 weeks after surgery. A compression garment is worn for up to 6 weeks to reduce the bruising and swelling that occurs during the first few weeks after surgery.

RESULTS 
A brachioplasty will enhance the overall shape of the arm, eliminating the "batwing" deformity. The biggest drawback is the resulting scar that runs down the inside of the arm.
