Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation or breast enlargement is a surgical procedure involving the use of saline or silicone breast implants to enhance the size and shape of a woman's breasts. For additional before and after examples visit breast enhancement pictures.

Breast implants can be round or tapered (tear drop) in shape; they can be textured (rough) or smooth. Analyzing the patient's body shape, bone structure, and exact measurements helps the surgeon determine which implants to use and where to place them (behind or in front of the chest muscle). A very thin individual may need the implant placed behind the muscle to achieve a more natural and less rounded appearance.

  • An incision is made under the breast in its crease. The implant is then placed either above or below the chest muscle.
  • The breast surgery takes about one to two hours and is performed under general anesthesia. Patients return home the same day.
  • Breast augmentation can be performed in conjunction with a Breast Lift (Mastopexy).

The bandage is removed the next day and the patient is placed in a surgical bra, which is worn full-time for three to four weeks following surgery. Patients should avoid lifting anything over their heads for about a week. Depending on the level of activity required of them, most patients return to work within a few days.

The goal of breast enlargement surgery is to achieve fuller, larger breasts. Many patients find that augmenting their breasts improves their body proportions by balancing the top half with the bottom half. In addition to size, beautiful breasts have other features, including a gentle slope, a central nipple position, and cleavage. Each of these features can be enhanced through this plastic surgery procedure.
