Pinning Surgery (Otoplasty)

An Otoplasty, or ear pinning surgery, can be performed at any age after the ears have reached their full size, usually when the individual reaches five years of age. Because the cartilage is more pliable in children, performing this surgery on younger patients is much more advantageous than performing it on patients who are older.

  • Through an incision just behind the ear, in the natural crease where it attaches to the head, the skin and cartilage are reshaped and repositioned with permanent sutures.
  • The ear enhancement surgery takes about two hours and is performed under general anesthesia for young patients and under local anesthesia, combined with a mild sedative, for older children and adults.
  • This Procedure is often done in conjunction with other facial plastic surgical Procedures.

Following surgery, a dressing is applied for about a week and a protective headband is worn for two to four weeks. Patients my resume all normal activities after that time frame.
