Ear Pinning
An Otoplasty, or ear pinning surgery, can be performed at any age after the ears have reached their full size, usually around five years old. The fact that the cartilage is more pliable in children gives an added advantage to performing the procedure on younger versus older patients.
PROCEDURE
Through an incision just behind the ear, in the natural crease where it joins to the head, the skin and cartilage is reshaped and repositioned with permanent sutures.
The ear pinning surgery takes about 2 hours and is performed under general anesthesia for young patients and under local combined with a mild sedative for older children and adults. This procedure is often done in conjunction with other facial plastic surgical procedures.
RECOVERY
Following surgery, a dressing is applied for about a week. A protective headband is worn for 2-4 weeks. Full activities can resume after that time.
RESULTS
The results of this ear cosmetic surgery are ears in proportion to the size and shape of the face and head. Because of the placement of the scar, as it fades, it becomes essentially undetectable. Adults and children alike reap the psychological benefits from the cosmetic improvement, which can improve self-esteem.
