As a person ages, time and gravity weaken the supporting ligaments of the skin, fat, and muscles of the face. As a result, these facial tissues drop, causing loss of cheekbone prominence, jowling, distinctive jaw line, deepening of facial neck wrinkles as well as excess skin. The overall effect is that of a "worn out" and tired look.

A facelift is a plastic surgery procedure that rejuvenates the lower face, midface, and neck. It smoothes the loose skin, tightens underlying tissues and removes excess fat. It also refines the jaw line, restoring the original facial shape.

PROCEDURE
• Through incisions under the chin and around the ear and hairline, the excess skin is removes and the underlying muscles are tightened. Changes made in the platysma muscle of the neck create a new chin-neck line.
• Surgery takes 1 to 2 hours and is performed under general anesthesia with return home the same day.
• A facelift is often performed in conjunction with other facial plastic surgeries such as eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty and brow lift (see patients below)
• Other procedures which rejuvenate the face include the QuickLift® procedure, liposuction, by removing unwanted fat around the jowls, chin, and neck areas, and the use of Injectable fillers and facial implants to help counter the hollowed out appearance associated with aging.

RECOVERY
The bandages are removed the day after surgery. Following removal of stitches, makeup and hair styling can be used to hide scars. Swelling and bruising usually subside after 2 weeks but numbness may last for several months. Cigarette smokers have more problems with healing. Exercise and sun exposure with sun screen allowed after 1 month.

RESULTS

Today’s facelifts use shorter scars that are almost imperceptible by 3 months. The most youthful results are achieved by combining several procedures at once, allowing the face to maintain form and balance throughout its features.

Pulsed light photofacial, Botox and chemical peel can provide a "finishing touch" by softening fine lines and improving the overall texture of the skin. The patients below had a combination of face/neck lift, brow lift, and blepharoplasty.
