What Happens During Gynecomastia Surgery?

Most gynecomastia surgeries begin with SmartLipo™ (laser-assisted liposuction) and power assisted liposuction to melt the fat and begin to sculpt and define the male chest. This is performed through tiny poke hole incisions located in the armpit and in the areolar. Next, any remaining glandular (breast) tissue is removed through a small incision under the nipple in the areolar. It is done under local anesthesia right in the office. The scars are typically not noticeable and blend into the pigmented area of the areola. Patients that have stretched, sagging skin around the breast area may require surgical excision of the skin to achieve the best results. Dr. Pisarski will discuss which approach is best for you during your consultation.

What is Recovery Like Following Gynecomastia Surgery?

Upon waking up from anesthesia, you will be in the recovery room under the close supervision of our medical staff. It’s common to feel groggy, disoriented, or cold due to the effects of anesthesia. The team will monitor your vital signs, pain levels, and overall well-being to ensure a safe recovery. Once you are alert, we’ll provide you with post-operative care instructions. These guidelines will cover how to care for your incisions, manage swelling and discomfort, recognize signs of complications, and understand the timeline for follow-up visits. Afterwards, you’ll be able to go home and begin the recovery process. Keep in mind you will need someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first 24-48 hours to assist with mobility and care. Mild bruising and swelling are expected side effects. You will be able to return to work after around a week, drive after a few days, and resume physical exercise after two to four weeks.
